City Hotel
Located in the Jardins district, home to some of Sao Paulo's finest boutiques, this high-rise hotel offers a stone-and-wood design palette sampling deco- elements from the 20's and 30's. The entrance of the hotel, flanked by a restaurant and high-rise residential condos, is well guarded by ear-plugged security detail seemingly ready for an invasion. Instead, a steady stream of Brazil's business elite and a few tourists, arrives to a sprawling lounge area assembled with leather settees and comfortable club chairs inviting to two-handed high balls of scotch or gin. Adjacent to the lobby lounge is Baretto (which actually means Jazz Bar in Portugese), a New-York style club where men still wear three-piece suits " albeit with a 30-inch waist and miniskirt-strutting supermodel on his arm. An enclosed rooftop pool, surrounded in limestone with skyline views of the city, offers a top-notch fitness center to keep the Brazilian torsos in shape. The Fasano family, who own and operate the hotel, are well known in São Paulo as restaurateurs with a history spanning over as 100 years. Their adjacent flagship restaurant, called simply Fasano, has presided over the address (itself named for great-grandfather Vittorio Fasano) since 1990 " thirteen years before the hotel itself.<br />
The Room
Offering sixty-four guest rooms overlooking the Jardins neighborhood and Sao Paulo’s skyline, the hotel offers a conservative-spin on luxury appealing to business travelers and those fleeing the typical piped-in lounge music of boutique hotels. Of the three high-end luxury hotels in Sao Paulo (two others include Emiliano and Unique), here one finds a harmonious balance between style and service that results in bathrooms free of missing grout or poorly installed fixtures, high-end furnishings that are both modern and free of wear-and-tear, and a straightforward entertainment system that separates doesn’t confuse your black-out curtains from your TV controls. Rooms feature a brown color palette with Brazilian-hardwood floors, crimson-leather club chairs and artwork retracing Sao Paulo’s history in black-and-white photographs.
